About

Nell Gwynn charts the rags-to-riches story of Nell, London’s first actor-ess ("female actor”), in a saucy, irreverent, not-entirely-historically-accurate but very entertaining look into this woman’s life. A true tale of Restoration theatre, the controversial introduction of female performers, a King’s desires and the trials and tribulations of breaking a glass ceiling within a possessive world of theatrical performers. Playwright Jessica Swale captures the quick wit of the time and turns it into a modern farce for today.
