Referencing the union of opposing forces, ‘Syzygy’ is an investigation of metaphoric and visual contradiction. Historic sculptures, ceramic armatures and the Australian landscape have been observed and reimagined by the artists through mark making. The soft and fleshy curves of the human body are collided with the rigidity and weight of stone. Through this method, classic iconography from mythology and art history are reinterpreted through the lens of contemporary Australian women.

Ella Senbruns is a Sunshine Coast artist who works between mixed-media drawing, painting and murals.
With a striking and distinct style, Senbruns’ strong understanding of dynamic linework morphs and transforms her images into fantastical and unexpected compositions. These artworks are often surreal, colliding the body with natural motifs to explore love, loss, and the plethora of emotions in between.
In 2021 Senbruns graduated from a Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) at the Queensland College of Art. She has since worked as a studio artist, muralist, illustrator and life drawing instructor.
Martina Clarke is a figurative oil painter who lives in the Gold Coast hinterland. She is heavily inspired by the Australian landscape and how people relate to their environment.
This is reflected in her paintings, as she explores universal sensations of sunlight, contemplation and slowness, which are inspired by the natural environment.
This self portrait portrays the artists relationship to self and to her muse; the forest.
Through this painting she reveals her own calm confidence of someone who has spent many hours in this forest exploring, observing and painting. She props herself up on a leaning tree trunk with her brushes still in hand and gazes steadily at the viewer as if you are the subject of her next artwork.
Martina Clarke won the People’s Choice Award in BPP 2022.
‘Syzygy’ is a Friends of Metro Venue Hire exhibition.
